Chakrata is a mountainous piece of land belonging to Dehradun. River Yamuna has many tributaries, the largest among them being Tons which flows through entire Uttarakhand. Chakrata is situated at the banks of this tributary. The very drive to this place can be pleasant with high mountains, giant oak trees and conifers on both sides. Chakrata is also famous for its red coloured trees named rhododendrons. Such dense forests tinted with these red coloured trees offer a sight that gets etched into the viewer’s minds. Therefore it is not surprising that tourists rush to this place to spend their holidays here. Establishment 22 of Indian Army
A speciality of Chakrata is that it houses the army cantonment. This part of the district is out of bonds for visitors because several missions like weapon training and obstacle training are conducted here for the candidates. The Special Frontier Force of the Indian army is stationed here. This force was initially launched in 1962 during the times of Sino- Indian war. Now this force is referred to as the Establishment 22 and is supervised directly by the Intelligence bureau. Even though visiting these camps is not allowed, there are a few Hotels in Chakrata that are situated nearby with a view of these camps. There are particular Chakrata Hotels who do take their residents on tour to camp areas that are not restricted but would still require special permission.
Several attractions of Chakrata
Many Hotels in Chakrata remain unoccupied during monsoon season. This is because of the frequency of landslides during monsoons which ultimately block the roads leading to Chakrata.
